A question about claws

sunfox Mar 10, 2004 01:54 PM

Ra's claws are pretty long so I was thinking about cutting them (I haven't done it yet). When I started taking a closer look at them to get an idea of where to trim, I noticed that one of his nails is split. The upper part (brownish coloured nail) is separated from the smaller whitish lower part. I think it's causing him discomfort because he holds that particular finger up (and no, he's not "giving me the finger" ) when he's just standing there. Is this something I need to worry about? Do they lose their claws like cats and dogs do? I need to know if I need to take him to the vet or not. I'll try to post of picture of the damaged claw as soon as I can (Ra doesn't seem to want to cooperate with me today).

Thanks

Sorry it didn't come out too well. The flash reflected too much at that distance. I'll try again later (Ra doesn't like that camera very much). You can see how the claw is split in half. I think it's hurting him when he puts pressure on it. What can I do?

You can clip their claws up til the 'quick.' The quick is the part with the vein in it. Clip anything past that. Wash his feet if you can't see it.
