Who's got the largest...

agalinis Mar 10, 2004 04:01 PM

King in captivity? We've talked big kings on this site over and over - it's time for all of us to put up or shut up!

I'm talking proof...pics with some gauge of measurement. We've all seen some large ones and Hillson's got his site with great pics. but how 'bout some fresh pics with a way to see the real size of our largest kings? I'm just curious as to owns the current Big Daddy of Kings.

In the next day or so (when I get my digital camera set up) I'll put up pics of "Augustus," my GA boy I got from Hillson (sucker LOL); Hillson's going to freak when he sees how much larger in girth this snake is than when I got in from him over a year ago.

So it's time to whip it out boys...let's see who's got the biggest snake that we can all verify (easy Hillson, we're not talking about that kind of snake LOL).

Special Ed - "Yeaaaaay"

This is a pic I took today of me holding my male from Wakulla CO., FL. We measure him at about 61 inches in length back in December 2003. I'm about 6'3".

Cool looking snake! I saw your post about the catch in Mitchell Co, GA. There are some good spots in that county and in parts of east-central Miller Co and just east of Quitman in Brooks Co. were you've got alot of farmland and places with tin. Plus all those creeks that drain into the Withlacoochee River have some choice spots - I was always looking for plants but I caught a small Eastern on my bosses farm just east of Quitman back in 2000 but he wanted the snake to stay on his 100 acres, which was cool with me even though I wanted to bag it! If you can ever get on those longleaf pine plantations in Thomas and Grady Cos. and work those creek areas I bet you could really rack up man. Boy I miss it there!

And you're killing me with the background shots dude! The fence in the background looks just like my place in Tallahassee looked and I can just "tell" from the way the vegetation, etc. looks that you're in that part of the world.

I don't know when, but in no more than a year I'll be back in northern Florida somewhere...I miss the shi# out of it and I could kick myself for leaving - all the kings, surfing, women; damm, what the hell was I thinking! LOL

I'm a Florida boy who's away from home and not diggin' it at all,, but you've got to make sacrifices sometimes...dammit!

Got some low budget pics I just took of "Crusher" my 5.5 foot Florida King who never turns down a good rat!!! I have some super pics that I took with my brand new digi-cam, but they're all around 1 MB J-peg files .If someone can give me some pointers on how to change my 1 Mb size pics of this snake into, say 50-100kb's that would be great. Until then, sorry for the poor pics, but i promised someone that I would post some. I guess it's better than nothing, maybe? (The dollar bill in the pic is 6" x 2.5" of course)

Thanks,

Zee

Looking at your pic mine looks a little bit smaller so I bet mine is closer to 5' than 5.5'

cam , or that came with your printer or scanner look threw your
programs like in accesories , the most common is MGI photo 95,
but you open the pic with the software select edit then select
resize and pick 600 x 420 or thereabouts , another easy way would be to highlight the pic with your mouse and in your mouses little window select "open with" and it will give you a few choices of differ programs to open it with - look around your computer you should have something--- that's a large snake! man

Thank you very much for the help. (Unfortunately), I am still learning so much about computers! Will try all of those options. Something should work!!! Once I get this I will post some really nice pics of my monster rat crusher. He really does have nice markings.

Thanks

You have a few options on jpeg size. You could look at the setup menu of your camera and lower the resolution. This will create a smaller size. Or you could use some photo editing software. If I want to shrink a picture quickly I just use MS paint, it comes with Windows. First I crop the picture then I shrink it by going to the image menu and choosing stretch/skew.

BlueKing Mar 11, 2004 06:47 PM

Thanks a lot. I will try this also. Then hopefully I can share some really nice pics that I took yesterday of my "rat crusher".

Those are some big 'ums! I'm going to try and put a shot up today or tomorrow of my Terminator 2, Judgement Day snake!

Good idea with the dollar bill - I'll do the same.

Yesterday some folks here at the Museum came in with a ca. 3' long, nice Speckled king (he's got some serious battle scars and some skin blistering though) from the Delta that upchuked a rat snake that is at least 3 inches longer and clearly bigger around! LOL If I get my camera up here soon I'll take a pic of the devoured ratsnake - when they saw it in the field they thought it had intestinal problems or some disease...but it turns out that the damm Speckled had turned this poor ratsnake into an accordian!! You guys will love it and if I can put the two close together in the same shot you'll see how a smaller king can toss back a larger snake!

Keith, this will interest you...you mentioned how the heads on wc kings tend to be larger, like the coastal GA Eastern I caught in McIntosh Co. This little speckled has a head that seems larger than you would expect from a snake of his girth. He has a short neck that is more slender than his head or upper body. Right now he's making up for lost time by tossing back a few mice...figured I should feed him a good meal after he lost a nutritious ratsnakecicle!

If you have Adobe Photoshop, open the image and at the top click on Image, and then image size. An image size box will come up. Under Pixel Dimension, hit one of the down arrows next to pixel and you can change it from pixel to percent. Enter the percentage of the size you want the image to be. I usually put mine at the percentage that if fills up the screen. In actual size, your pic will be very large. After you enter say 45%, your image will be 45% smaller than the original size. I use Percent because it will keep your picture in the same proportion as the orginal. If you want to see what the actual size of the picture is, go to View at the top and click on Actual Pixels.

Now when you go to save your pic, click on File, then Save As, and type the name of the pic. Another small window will open that says JPEG Options. Under Image options, you can choose the quality of the image...1 being the lowest...10 being the highest. By changing this number, you also change the size of the picture. Not the actual physical size but the amount of memory it uses. Note at the bottom of the JPEG Options window and you will see Size and then numbers like ~153.99K / 27.2 @ 56.6 kbps. The 153.99K stands for the size of the image. If you change the number up in the Quality box, you can see how it changes the size of the picture and can adjust it to whatever size you want it to be. I've noticed that whether you set the quality at 1 or 10, it really doesn't look much different when you post a pic over the internet. Anyway, hope this makes sense to you. And hopefully you have Adobe Photoshop or I would have typed this for nothing.

Thanks for the suggestions. Will have to see exactly what I have on this computer. I just bought it recently to replace my "dinosaur". Thanks a lot anyway. . .

haha, Cyclops arrived today, and hes a biggie! im 5'9, and hes about as long as me laid out strait. love this snake, glad i got him!

sk8r009 Mar 11, 2004 12:23 PM

...didnt have a dollar, do you take checks?

foxturtle Mar 11, 2004 03:55 PM

from that angle, your Suwanee king looks a lot like a goini. Kinda weird. The Suwannee king is a Florida/eastern intergrade, and goini used to be considered a Florida/eastern intergrade.

sk8r009 Mar 13, 2004 08:12 PM

....stretched out straight, a tad over 66in. hard to totally straiten a snake.

evers310 Mar 11, 2004 02:40 PM

This is a king I found on my girlfriends property, I didnt keep him so I cant take a pic next to a dollar bill but I estimate he was over 4'. If I see him again this summer I'll take a pic of him next to a dollar bill.
