My Baby Corn Won't Shed Nor Eat!!!! Help!!!!

Eydie Mar 10, 2004 07:35 PM

Hi,

I've read many of the existing posts to try to find out if there is a corrilation between a snake not shedding completely and not eating. Mine is doing both. He hasn't eaten in about 3 1/2 weeks. I've tried frozen and fresh. I've tried exposing brain matter. Nothing is working. I've put a larger water dish in there and covered half of the viv. I don't want Riley to die. He's only eaten 2 pinkies since I've had them, but I think he might of regurgitate both because I found them in the viv practically in one piece. It didn't look like it was even eaten. Help!!

Ok so are you sure you have the correct temperature gradient measured with an accurate temp gauge? How are you providing the heat your snake needs to digest it's meal? For shed problems you might want to use a small container with a hole cut in it and moist spahgnum moss inside. You mentioned you thought it regurgitated before, did you handle it too soon after it ate..try not to disturb him too much either way..have you tried live pinkies or pinkie parts or scenting with anole...hatchling corns can be easily stressed if handled too much..for starters I would definately check the temps though..

Hi,

The temperature on the hot side is 75. The temp on the cool side is 70. I have an undertank heater. Perhaps this isn't keeping the tank hot enough. Do I need a light on the top?? I felt that this might make it too hot. I read that the undertank heater was supposed to be enough. We've tried to feed him again, to no avail. My husband cut a pinkie in half and he still turned his nose up at it. He's still in mid-shed too. I'm surprised he's still alive. I check on him every morning and it makes me so sad that he's not eating. What should I do?

Eat first, shed later.

Put the baby corn in a small brown bag with 2 live pinks overnight. Make sure the temp is 80 for the feeding. Do not disturb for 12 hours.

What do you have to lose?

One of my baby corns didn't shed until 6 wks after I had it. Their colours make their shed process hard to detect. When the snake stops being active for a few days, then that's a good sign that the shed may be happening.

Goo luck. Be positive. Everything should work out...

I put him in a bag with a live pinkie overnight a few days ago and he did not eat it. My daugter then adopted the pinkie and attempted to keep it alive as a pet for 2 days. It finally passed away, as we knew it would. It was sad.. Anyway, what else should I try? Someone suggested that the temperature may be off in the tank. 75 on the hot side. If that's too low, how do I raise it? I have an undertank heater now.

Temps, hides, too much handling, feeding to soon after a regurge.Did the pinkies stink bad when you found them?Like the above post mentioned about temps,82-85 warm side,70-75 cool side,to hot/cold will make them regurge. So will handling after feeding. If i were you i would make sure my temps were correct, wait about 10-14 days then try refeeding with a day old pink.Dont handle for at least 3 days after you feed.If the snake wont feed try forcing a pinky head or a mouse tail down it's melon....Paul..

Do you know for certain if it's ever eaten and kept a feed down?

It's just that I've raised 3 clutches of eggs and the only hatchling I lost was one that tried to feed, but regurged each time, I tried all sorts, but nothing worked. I think it might have had a defect in it's digestive system.

I hope this isn't the case with your little one, but I'd check with where you got it from to make sure they are a reputable supplier, who make sure their babies are feeding properly before parting with them.

Yes it has. When I bought him, they said that he was eating f/t. That's what I got him. He ate 2 times. I found the next day what looked like a pinkie in a cacoon. It did not look like snake poop. So, he may have barfed it up. (this my first experience with a snake, sorry) I got him from a breeder off this web-site located in Texas. The name escapes me right now, however. Any other suggestions?
