redtail's Eye is swollen?

domingoakasunday Mar 10, 2004 07:53 PM

I just looked in on my baby redtail and it appears his right eye is swollen and puffed out more then his left eye. I have no Idea as to what could have caused this or how to help him. Please if anyone has any Ideas let me know!

could it just have gotten something in its eye? some sand was spilled in the cage, could that have gotten into the snakes eye and caused inflamation? if that is the case what should I do to help? should I soak the snake in water? should I just leave it alone and hope it gets better?

Schedule an appointment with a reliable vet. if it looks bad enough to cause concern,it should be checked by someone qualified to make an accurate diagnosis.I don't think the sand would be the source of your problem though(mho).

is it possible she retained an eye cap on one eye which makes it appear to be pufed out and/or inflamed to some degree?

is there rocks or abrasive wood she could have done this with?

do you notice tiny beige/brown to black bugs around the edges of her eye socket? if so these are mites which can irritate to this extent in some instances...

let us know..

his Eye is still swollen. I have checked for mites but have not seen any around his eye or any other place on him. he is being housed on paper towels and I have not seen anything on them either. I just got him a little over 2 weeks ago and no he has not shed while I had him, however I did not see anything that looked like an eye cap. the swollen eye looks like the lens around his eye is full of fluid and it is pushed out to about twice its normal length. I do not want to risk the boa going blind or loosing sight in that eye. I have upped his temps a little and upped his humidity a little as well to try and help fight an infection...

I am still unsure as to what caused it.
