Is this a good breeding size?...

owen13 Mar 10, 2004 08:24 PM

I got a trio and want to know if they are proper size to breed. I am pretty sure they are above 9-10 months old. They are about 7 inches long and a decent weight. This friday I am going to offer pinky mice. I have a stupid scale that I have to push the weights around to find out. With the scale I am estimating 40-50 grams. I think after they eat pinkie mice (if they do) I will introduce the male. Tell me if I need to wait a few more weeks or not. I definitly think that one of my females is ripe enough to mate. Shes got a nice body and a decent tail.

Thank you,
Owen

If I were you, I would wait. You need to be sure that the females are at least 50g because if they are not large enough they can have reproductive complications and possibly die.

You're totally right, I have to be patient. Tommorow I will feed them 2.5 gram pinkies. Just a few more months I suppose

I'm pretty sure I can't agree with that, because some geckos just don't get that big. The fact that they're naturally small doesn't mean they can't safely breed. A 50 gram gecko is pretty big. I would also ask how old the gecko is, and whether it's got a good, fat tail.

Every leopard gecko should have the potential to reach over 50g if it is healthy and well taken care of. In my experience 50g is on the light side for an adult leo. You are right that it should have a fat tail, but it should also have bubbles of fat behind its front limbs. In my experience it is safest to wait until the leo is at least 50g and at least 1.5 - 2 years of age.

Just from my experience,

Matt
