GREEN SNAKES

GREEN SNAKES

Green snakes are not good for beginners, but if your a little more experienced, they can make great pets. I mean the rough green snakes. i do work with smooth greens in the field. Rough greens can be hard to take care of. I have had great luck giving mine lots of room to hunt, roam, bask, hide and swim. I also gave mine UVA lighting, and offered only 3-4 calcium dusted crickets at a time. My first, Bobber, was about 3 feet when I got him. I had him about a year; he died of old age. My second, babby Bobber, was only about 3 inches when I got him. He recently went through a huge growth spurt. This one attacked crickets immediately the day I got him. He gapes to look scary. If you have any questions, feel free to post them here.

Most of the roughs I have kept have required about the same maintanence that any of my other snakes have. If not less, simply because they eat invertebrates. If they eat for you in captivity, there isn't just a ton else that makes them hard to take of other than the fact that they can stress fairly easily. But with the correct setup, they do fine. I think everyone needs to stop claiming to be experts with one species or a nother (which it seems like is popping up a lot on this forum) and let the questions come and be answered. Because I highly doubt one of is an expert, myself included (so you don't think I am just belittling everyone).

That is really not true.I caught my rough green snake in Summer 03 and he is a rough green snake. He'll take anything I give him.I have him in a 55 gallon tall cage now.He was in a 10 and he did fine.A rough green snake was my very 1st snake and im only 13.I caught him on our road.

He has a "girlfriend"right now he has bred her.....She has already laid her eggs...waiting for them too hatch!!!!

Thanks

Congragulations!

I guess rough greens have better luck in this world than I thought. They can make very wonderful pets. I'm just saying that they're nothing to put in a shoebox with some aspen bedding. Good luck with that breeding actvity.

Hi again:

Gret job doing what you thought would work. Green Snakes can make excellent pets. I guess I just saw too many sick ones in pet stores. You're right; baby roughs are cute! I'll see if I can download a picture of my 10 month hatchling. Now if only i could get this scanner to work...

Never try to guage the ease of keeping a species through pet store species. I rarely see healthy pet store herps. And therefore, if I followed that same logic you were using, corn snakes, kingsnakes, horned frogs, and leopard geckos would all be considered tough captives.

HI:

You're right about that too. I prefer to buy from private breeders. I own a corn snake and many other herps, and very few were bought at pet stores. My green snakes have done well, and, from what I have heard on this forum, other peoples have done well to. Sure, many people say their greens don't eat, but I simply think it was because they're so secretive, and the keepers never got to witness the feeding itself. It took a year or so before I actually saw Bobber eat, but baby bobber ate about 4 crickets right away. I guess what this means is, you can't say something about a whole species and think its true. Its like humans. The character all depends on the individual.
