Well my russian is actually doing very well in this tank, when he was smaller I had him in a smaller tank and he started to bang at the sides of the tank and then I would get him a bigger one he was happy in that one for a few years then did the same thing. So it is kind of like he lets me know when he is bored with his tank and is ready for a new one. I also agree that keeping him or any of my reptiles in smaller tanks does help me alot in maintaning the appropriate temps and in some cases humidity. I live in a very old house in New York and it is VERY cold and dry so smaller in my instance is better. ALthough he does not have outdoor housing when it is nice out in the summer I take him out on the front lawn and he loves it. Just to answer your question about how I was able to keep him in a 40L.
