What do you guys use as a substrate in your hide boxes?

Poohbear03031 Mar 11, 2004 03:43 AM

I have been using papertowel, it is very hard to keep damp in the warm side hides though. Any suggestions?

I use vinyl tile that I got at Home Depot in the cage and I use a peatmoss/vermiculite mix in the hide boxes. The peatmoss/vermiculite only needs misted every couple of days.

I'm using vermiculite, but I'm expecting eggs.

Vermiculite is very often used in gardening, great for getting cuttings to root without molding. I have only bought in this form, but it has been many years, the stuff lasts me a long time. The bag size I got was the same size as 100 pound bag of feed, but weighs maybe 20 pounds. Cost less than $8.

The stuff sold is not in natural form, but is super heated basicly inflating the denser mica form. It is super light and makes for great packing material for fragile items.

...it works the best in my opinion. I have tried many things - this is the best. Just make sure to buy 100% peat, and make sure there is no perilite or other garbage added. Good luck.

Has anyone every used Spanish Moss? That stuff is abundant in N. Florida. I have used it in snake cages for looks. I just heat it in the oven on low heat like you would with drift wood.

i use paper towel. What i do is a soak the papertowels in water then let all the water drip off. Then place the paper towels in hide, press down on the paper towels to wring wate out and then drain the excess water.
