OT (sorta) uros and beardeds

lola44 Mar 11, 2004 10:35 AM

Ok, I'm still a newbie here but have definitely caught the 'bug' about reptiles. We only have one bearded dragon and I'd like to set up another habitat for another lizard. Originally I was thinking of another bearded but now I'm wondering about getting a uromastyx. Since they we be in totally different enclosures and even different rooms in the house, I was wondering if anyone here has both types of lizards and do you find their diets are similar (the veggie/greens part anyways)? From what I've been reading it seems pretty close. I figure since I'm chopping veggies/greens for my bearded that I could just chop a few more for the uro. Just curious as to what others have or if anyone is already doing this. Thanks. L.

They both have basically the same diet other than you barely feed the uros crickets or worms. The uro's like more heat and have a different living style than the beardieds. I have 2 uros and my beardies will be at my house next week. The reason I'm getting beardies is beacuse they are AWSOME and yes they do have about the same feeding/ habitat as uros.

i have both 3 beardies and 3 Uros (1 mali & 2 saharans)
they all get the same greens and the beardies get pellets and bugs

Do you mind telling me what substrate you are using for your uro?? After the "great substrate debate" for beardeds mine is on shelf liner and I realize that its not practicle for a uro. The bird seed option intrigues me. L.

I personally use dirt for my malis.....it's upkeep in cleaning is more, but they really like to dig and burrow....so in the long run I think they are happier....I do change my entire substrate every 6 weeks.....some do it less often, but I find, even with daily poo scooped shortly after that period of time it's starts to smell, so I've found that there is no smell consistantly before 7 weeks so I change it every six weeks, give or take a couple of days.

I feed mine the same greens as my beardies....a very occassional superworm, silkworm or small hornworm for a treat....they also get some bird seed and bird pellets....and a few repcal adult bearded dragon pellets for treats as well(they love them, but because of their protein content, I don't give them many or very often)....

if you go over to the uro forum and search for subtrate or dirt mix.....you will find that the substrate debate for uros is even more in depth than the beardies was. everyone pretty much agrres though on a moist dirt substrate that aloows the uros to dig...although some of us can't yet do that with our current set ups

hope this helps!

Oh, sorry. I guess I'm the only one that disagrees with you, but I don't moisten my substrate. Too much humidity. I've had uros for over four years now, and even my oldest one(he's almost 5) has never had a water bowl or his substrate moistened. Humidity can cause upper respiratory infections in uros. Instead, I give him a stone hide box that is almost completely covered with his substrate. He likes to get inside of it at night. Of course, everyone has their own way of doing things. This is just my way.

I use sand on my beardies & my uros. But of course, everyone has their own preference.

I also use a stone hide for my uro's and Desert Top Soil that I go out into the desert and dig up, the only problom is that you have to sift it to be sure that ther are no cactus thorns or old beer cans, also very dusty. but they like to dig in it and create clouds of dirt to fall into their food bowl of course. The Beardies are alot cleaner.

I love beardies & uros. But it seems like the beardies also have a little more personality. Don't get me wrong, my uros have personality too, but it's somewhat different. Kinda hard to explain it.
