Question? Opinions NEEDED please

Jbuggs20 Mar 11, 2004 11:26 AM

ok 1 how old about does a leopard gecko have to be to visually sex? Thats the question part and here is the opinion part.Ok i have a local wholesaler who has good quality BABY leopard geckos at UNBEATABLE PRICES but here's the catch im looking to build a breeding group and the seller doesnt know if they were temperature sexed. So far i have bought 4 babies but at this price im thinking about getting 10 more now should I do it and risk being overloaded with males? Or should I just keep what I have to see what comes out. I love my babies more then my adults lol. I have only had geckos for a few months but am planning on attempting to breed them my incubator is sitting in the box in the closet waiting. I have kept reptiles for over 8yrs and never succesfully breed or even got a egg so I know if I get the geckos to go and they hatch out im keeping every single one of them. Well I side tracked alittle but you have to see where im coming from. Buy the babies at the cheap cheap unsexed price or pay 2x 3x 4x as much for temperature sexed babies?

The only help I can give you is this. If you're going to buy a bunch more, find out if they are from the same hatchling group. Basically what I'm saying is, if the 10 you're going to buy all hatched together in the same incubator then you're odds aren't good that you'll have different sexes. Also a lot of breeders who do wholesale incubate for only one sex. I noticed that whoever my local pet store (where I used to work) sold leos to, they are almost always females. Out of all 8 bought there, all of them are females, and we are pretty much told only one breeder supplies us for the most part. So if you're getting 10 from one guy, you run the strong possibility that whoever bred them didn't breed for different sexes. I hope that helped! I would just hate for you to have a house full of boys!

4 to 6 months for visual sexing maybe more depending on the rate they mature.

I'd advise waiting until you know what sex the babies are. Most wholesale breeders hatch out females for the simple reason that they can house them all together if needed an they usually won't kill each other. This could be a bonus for you though. If you pick up 14 gex and they all turn out to be female all you have to do is buy one or two really nice males and you've got a huge breeding colony already. Well two seperate breeding colonys if you buy two males.

I agree with Dedalus, usually wholesale breeders breed for females for storage reasons. Does the wholeseller have any references that you could maybe contact to find out what sex most of their geckos turned out to be? If you end up with females get yourself a nice stud and you'll be set to breed in about a year (depending on the age of the babies). Good luck!

Just recently, there was a huge deal where i live too, I, by fluke chance i bought one and its turned out to be a male. I figured all breeders (and i would if i had eggs) would prefer more females.
That's my experience, i totally understand how you feel cuz i went back hoping to get more but they only had 2 left by the end of 2 months.
Also if you do end up with all males, do you know anyone around you that would buy them off you? That might be an option.

Good luck
