cuttlebone & crickets...

feuerwolf Mar 11, 2004 02:03 PM

two questions... how does one get a baby res to go for cuttlebone (do you break it up, put it in the water, put it on the land, attach it to the wall, etc. and do you just stick the crickets in with the turtles? thanks.

Can`t comment on the crickets, but for the cuttlebone, make sure you take off the hard backing/shell before giving it to your turtle. I break it up into head-size pieces and let 2 or 3 float in the water. It may take him a little while to figure out what it is (edible). For a baby, I`d have the pieces really small and I might try to rub a little sardine or smelt on it at first so it smells particularly appetizing to him.

Is this for the RES that`s lethargic?

it's for both of my babies... the bigger outgoing guy nibbled at it but didn't seem to like it much...

My turtle ignored the cuttlebone at first but now loves it. It is one of the items you can put in the water and not have to worry about it icking up the water or degrading into ammonia.

My turtle will also play with the cuttle bone. I don't bother breaking it down too much. When I'm removing the hard backing, I get little peices that I just throw in the tank willy-nilly but the cuttle can go in the tank anysize you want.
