HYBRID ANOLES

caecilianman02 Mar 11, 2004 03:24 PM

I have a large, naturalistic vivarium with a variety of flowers and ferns, pothos, a rock dish with water plants and stones, Spanish moss... You get the idea. Two of its residents are a green Anole and a brown Anole. the brown is a female with a very tiny, almost nonexistent dewlap. The green is a male. Would it be possible to crossbread them? I've observed the brown Anole attempt to mate with a green treefrog! Now that was frightening, not to mention impossible! But is there a green/ brown hybrid out there? I'd love to see some picture.

I remember reading about this on here a few months ago, and I believe someone actually did cross them, but the thing is for some laws of nature, they wouldn;t be able to further reproduce.

That isn't necessarily true, of course, many hybrids are able to reproduce.

Dave,

There was some research done with this many years ago. Off the top of my head, I can't remember the name of the researcher (it's probably someone really obvious). Anyway, he was in Cuba, I think. They have a lot of different species there.

He captured specimens of different species and painted the dewlaps to match other species which resulted in reproduction.

It is possible, but not likely to occur without some help.

I've seen green anole males mate with female browns...don't think that's the problem.

It's my understanding that the eggs are rarely viable, and if they do hatch, the hatchlings generaly don't last long.
