Are you wanting to talk about aquatic sals, or aquatic newts? I noticed that newts are what you mostly have.....You might get more replies if you ask about a specific aspect of care, such as housing (I have my C. orientalis in a half-water/half-land vivarium), or food (I feed mine frozen bloodworms, small earthworms, and live blackworms) or handling (don't!). Just some ideas....

I am fine discussing all cadautans. I keep only newts and an Axolotl, but I still know about the natural history of land dwelling salamanders. I am fascinated with the Asian giant Salamanders and hellbenders. This summer I am going on a vacation to look for a variety of herps, including hellbenders. I also enjoy designing amphibian vivaria.

well, axolotls are some of my favorite animals... currently, i only own a leucistic named googly, she's been battling fungus for the longest time. actually, almost 1.5 years. i'm convinced that only the cold temperatures i've kept her at are keeping her alive. i've had other axolotls, and i wrote my undergraduate thesis on them. i am just getting so discouraged, though, with my seeming inability to keep them healthy... especially since i'm kind of a specialist, after the year of intense research i did on them, i feel like i shoud be doing better (especially given how much i care for them). right now i'm having an extensive necropsy done on the last one i lose, i'm not going to give up...

currently: 0.1.0 axolotls, 0.0.9 catfish, 0.1 ferrets, 1.6 leopard geckoes, 0.0.20 oriental fire-bellied toads, and 0.2.0 sugar gliders
I really enjoy designing vivaria also....I've only built one, although it's gotten rebuilt and improved several times lol. If only I had more room, for a bigger tank.....I have some really cool ideas! I'm limited right now in space and funds for any more critters. What kind of pump or filter system do you use? What kind of plants do you have? I have a chronic problem with water seeping into the land area; I believe this is because I have acrylic as the divider, in a glass tank, sealed with silicone. I think the silicone can't create a watertight seal between two different materials; but of course, I'm not sure. Here's an oldish picture of my tank...only ten gallons.....
Hi there:
There is an awesome setup! In my reptile room (featuring 27 herps and inverts and 15 showcase vivariums,) you won't see any shoeboxes! My largest is a 75 gallon, but my best, a 20 gallon high, houses Anoles, a gecko and treefrogs. I use Boston ferns, bromeliads, African violets, Spanigh moss, pothos and palm trees in my vivaria. Some look even better than those in the neighborhood zoo! As for filters, I keep an axolotl, newts, and I also keep turtles in the summertime. Although pricy compared to other models, the Fluval Plus works great for me.
