My new MTS!Now i have 2!Boy or girl?Nobody knows!lol!

Flavia Guimaraes Mar 11, 2004 09:03 PM

Well, when i bought my adorable Leonardo, that awful petshop still had one MTS left. For months and months i have passed by that petshop hoping that poor MTS, left alone in the cage, obliged to live with a Blue Tongue, without nothing to eat but Blue Tongue's poop, was a female. If it was a female i could buy it and cage it together with Leonardo.Last week, when i was looking at him through the window, sad to see how thin and sick looking he was,the petshop owner called me and asked me if i wanted the MTS for free. She said she didnt know how to take care of it and as she knew i take very good care of my babies she wanted to offer it to me!I was very surprised but i accepted and i took the MTS home.
It is much smaller and thinner than Leonardo and its color is weird, too.It has a lot of black mixed with yellowish green. I presented it to Leonardo. They didnt fight and Leonardo seemed to like its smell. The new MTS ate a lot of Pothos plant, bit my finger but seems to be still easier to tame than Leonardo.By the way, MTS bites are NOTHING compared to adult male iguanas bites!
I know MTS are very hard to sex but if they didnt fight at the first contact do you think there is a possibility the new one is a female?
Thanks!Sorry for the long message!

PS By the way, the MTS on the photo is my sweet Leonardo, not the new comer!lol!

Congratulations Flavia on rescuing that poor soul and wish you the best of luck. It sounds like your going to need to medicate her. I hope you can make the arrangements.

Sincerely,

You took home a wildcaught animal that was visibly wasting away and one of the first things you did was introduce it to your existing collection?

Good luck.

My Leonardo and that new MTS (its name is Rafael, although im not sure its a male)came from the same petshop, where they shared the same cage, the same water bowl and probably the same poop for months in a row.Last July i bought Leonardo and Rafael stayed there, in the same petshop, in the same cage until 2 weeks ago when i brought it home too!
As i said in my previous message, im not caging them together because i dont know its gender.

LEEWAY CORUCIA RESEARCH CENTER (LCRC)

Hi Flavia,

I hope you don't feel we're just wanting to jump your case-we're not. We are just pointing out a serious issue. It is VERY possible your new Corucia became infected after Leonardo's departure. As stated, the hygenic conditions there are Spartan to say the least. Also, Stress can sometimes cause a flare-up due to lower resistance factors of pathogen development that was not in evidence before. Protect your precious babies- keep them apart for a standard quarantine.

Let us know if you need help.

Sincerely,
Brian

Were any other animals caged with this new one in the past seven months? Has the petstore gotten in any new animals in the past seven months? How many times in the last seven months has it been handled by strangers? How many times has the cage been cleaned in the past seven months? Of those times how many times was it cleaned out after cleaning other cages?

A lot can happen in 7 months.

As I said before, good luck.

Flavia, great to hear you got Leonardo a friend!!!! I would definately quarantine the new MTS from all of your animals until you know the new addition is strong and healthy with a 100% clean bill of health.
From what you say about his/her prior condition and husbandry it would not be a good idea not to take the gamble of the new MTS possibly infecting Leonardo or any of your other animals. Please take heed to this advice and quarantine this new guy for atleast 3 months and if it is in bad of shape as you say it is, get it to a vet if possible for a fecal and an exam. I cant stress this enough.
I am glad you got the MTS and from your post and pictures, I can tell you take excellent care of your animals and they are all lucky to be with you.
Good luck and if you have any questions or need any help, don't hesitate to give me a yell. I have almost 20 of these guys now and learn more everyday, so I have dealt with many issues and been successful.

GOOD LUCK and KEEP US UPDATED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Im not caging Rafael (my new MTS) with any of my reptiles. It is alone in a private cage, located in my balcony. It seems to be adjusting well, it is eating pothos plant and papaya, it is getting weight but i still think its color is weird. Well, perhaps it has a different skin color, thats all!
Since you have so much experience with MTS, can you answer me some questions? Both my MTS dont eat a lot but sleep a lot! They mix day and night, wake up in different hours, sometimes have lots of energy to explore the house, other times spend 2 days sleeping in arow.Thats normal?

ARKON Mar 16, 2004 01:48 AM

Flavia, from leonardo's pics, he seems healthy, his weight looks good and his colors look good and vibrant, right there that says your giving him a good level of care!!!! As far as not eating alot, I touched on this in a post a while ago with a corucia keeper and their newley aquired baby( who thought the baby was not eating enough)!!! In essence I was trying to tell the inquiree that what may not seem alot to us may be alot to a corucia. Albeit you as I remember keep pothos plants in his cage, so he eats kinda when he wants and then a little of what you offer aside from the pothos he has free roam of!! Correct???
Believe me, If they were not eating enough, it would show in their body structures, IE: the bones in the base of their tails and spine would be prominant as well as very skinny legs with no fat reserves present!!!!!!! ( Is this the case right now, from your pics everything looks good?)

As far as your question about having lots of energy to explore sometimes and none at other times such as two day sleeping periods, I would go as far to say that, that is normal based on your climate were you are located. In my opinion corucia and just reptiles in general are like batteries, somtimes the are charged and raring to go and other times they are just going through the motions with little energy ready to shut down based on their environment(temps/Humidity)( I mean go to sleep not die).
Flavia, I live in the US and have very differant climate year round, so I have to as far as my animals go "make my own climate and environment" that goes for if I want to keep any species. Im sure you can probably rely on your climate and weather year round, I have to use lights and heat pads and misting systems year round to sustain my groups life which is often a challange ecspecially during winter ( I see constant results and behavior due to this). Am I right and you wrong? absolutly not!!!!!!!!!!!!
Flavia, I am on your side, I would like to help you anyway I can, I believe you are genuine in your efforts and truley want to give and do, the best care you can possible to your group of animals.
I think my stating my experience and group count may come off wrong when I state it, my only reason for doing so is to give more creedance to what I am saying, not to sound superior, however, if that is how it came off I not only apologize , but will not state that in any more of my posts and will only try to give advice, again sorry if that came off wrong!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good luck and keep us updated, you can ask me anything you want, if I can't help you I will try!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Correct. I keep a few pothos plant inside Rafael's and Leonardo's cages and ...well...poor pothos plants, they dont last too long!

"Believe me, If they were not eating enough, it would show in their body structures, IE: the bones in the base of their tails and spine would be prominent as well as very skinny legs with no fat reserves present!!!!!!! ( Is this the case right now, from your pics everything looks good?)"

No, Leonardo has elephant legs!lol!

Yes, concerning my iguanas, gecko, BTSs, and MTSs i can rely on the weather.Malaysia is too hot for my salamanders and perhaps for my Croc Skink, although im not sure about that.

"Flavia, I am on your side, I would like to help you anyway I can, I believe you are genuine in your efforts and truly want to give and do the best care you can possible to your group of animals. "

Thanks! I admit that sometimes i feel my heart broken when i read some of other people's comments to my messages! If i didnt take care of my skinks they would already have died, what is not the case! I still have all the skinks i bought, Leonardo and my Croc Skink are doing great , my BTSs (Mega and Abdu)are fat like whales and i have been keeping Mega for 3 years!

"I think my stating my experience and group count may come off wrong when I state it, my only reason for doing so is to give more credence to what I am saying, not to sound superior,"

You dont sound superior! Im happy to have you to help me!

"Good luck and keep us updated, you can ask me anything you want, if I can't help you I will try"

Thanks and thanks again!
