Cypress Mulch as substrate

tuwhada Mar 11, 2004 10:04 PM

The reptile store that I regularly deal with uses cypress mulch by keepers choise on as their substrate for their leopard geckos. I have been using the calci-sand with a small dish of calcium for my one little female. As anybody heard of or used cypress mulch or should I stick with the sand.
Thanks
Christina

I'd say neither. Mulch can cause impactions just as easily as calci sand. I'd say go with astroturf.

i used cypress mulch in the past. it looked great, but for health concerns is is not good. it is hard to know if you have all the poop cleaned up. it holds moisture and parasites. if you feed crickets, the crickets can hide in it. i think it was harder for the geckos to see the crickets in the mulch.

i have also used the sand. it has it's problems as well.

i switched to tile a few months ago. i think it is the greatest and the only way to go!
