A new food source: Mantids!

princessmantisus Mar 12, 2004 11:06 AM

I kept a praying mantis I found on a sidewalk as a pet for a few months and she left behind two egg cases. I decided to wait around and see if they were fertile. They started hatching yesterday. The babies are TINY. I'm going to keep ten or so to watch them grow, but the rest are going straight to my dart frog! Its not a steady food source, but its free, non-native and easy.

Yeah, I've been thinking about raising up some mantids from egg cases for my Chameleon and was wondering how small they hatch out so I can offer some of the nymphs to my Tinc. How large were they when they hatched? I understand they eat FF so I thought maybe they were too big for the Darts. Thanks-Maggie

I love praying mantises.. I keep one for a pet almost every summer. Did you know praying mantises can eat small frogs?
