Switching from UPS to Airborne Express - Suggestions please...

Vargas Mar 12, 2004 11:06 AM

Hi,
I am just about to switch from “UPS” to “Airborne Express” and wanted to know it were a wise move – I have a feeling it is. I have had a couple incidents with UPS and have found that I may want to move on to Airborne Express even if they are a ½ hour away from me. Here is my dilemma; I have 3 UPS places near me. The strange thing is the same package can vary 10 to 15 bucks or so in price depending on where you take it. I am trying to avoid truck pickups as we are experiencing record heat here in Californian and the back of that UPS truck can get up to 120 plus!
Being I am shipping to areas that are still experiencing 32 degrees and lower you can imagine my concern as the temperature range fluctuates extremely. It was safe to send the reptiles out from the local Office Depot store (with UPS counter) for UPS pickup but now with this heat letting the animal ride around in the UPS truck is a high risk especially with heat packs – add 70 to 80 degrees in the box to 120 ambient in the back of a brown van and there is going to be trouble. Anyway long story short, any time I go to the UPS yard to ship direct they charge me way more! Same package at Office Depot was $30.25 I go to the UPS facility they want $43.00, which I reluctantly agreed to as I had a commitment to fill and I wanted to ensure the animals safety. I know we are very limited in who we can use but I deal strictly in non-venomous lizards and snakes – who is the best as I’m not really loving what “Brown Did for me Lately” LOL
Anyone have any suggestions or pointers?
Thanks Steve

--- Sign up for an account and do it all on-line, then just drop off the package at the most convienient UPS hub. That way you know what it is going to cost up front it is already paid for.

--- Send it overnight for delivery early in the morning. I live in San Diego so I know what you worry about.

--- This is inaccurite, a heat pack will typically raise the temp in the box 10 - 20 degrees at the most. Shipping overnight takes care of the possible day heat problem.
