How often do Veiled Chameleons shed?

JonPCab Mar 12, 2004 11:54 AM

I'm a new keeper of chameleons. I've most keeping experience with snakes, frogs, and invertibrates. I have a Veiled, about 3-5 months of age, I've had him since January, and it was maybe 3-8 weeks when I got him, but since I've had him, he hasn't shed once. Is this normal? How often are veileds supposed to shed?

Chams shed in response to growth rate. If he's not growing very fast he won't be shedding. What are you feeding and supplementing with. Check your gutloads (what are they?). He should be growing pretty fast at this age.

My gutload varies every week. I keep my crickets in an x-large kritter keeper (have about 1000 crickets at all times) I clean it regularly, I put a thin layer of Fluker's dry cricket feed that covers the bottom. Then I have Ectotherm cricket yummies in there which is gone in a few hours. Then I also put in, depending on the week, a bowl of finely chopped fruits and vegetables (apples, orange, bananas, tomatos, broccoli, lettuce, carrots, potatos, all that good stuff) which they eat like crazy. And I know they're gutloaded well, because all of my other reptiles eat the same crickets and they seem to shed normally and are fine. Maybe it's due to genetics? Species pushed beyond it's limits?
