Loose Tegu???

Taidus Mar 12, 2004 12:34 PM

K...I just have a question for all of you out there. I just dragon-proofed my bedroom and setup an 8'x4'x2' caged in (using dog exercise pen) area in my bedroom but I was actually thinking of getting rid of that and just letting my red have free roam. She's about 30" or so...maybe 32" max. and I want her to have the most possible room (not to mention having a caged in area that size in your room is a PAIN IN THE ASS). What do you all think of just letting her loose in my room?...Bad idea? or good?...Like I said it IS dragon proofed. The only place she could get under is my bed...and it's high enough I could get her out. So any feedback would be great. Thank you much.

I think it'd be good to have a moist hide box for him to sleep in so he could still get his humidity and have a completely dark place to retreat to.

Mine is still too small, so I have no first hand experience with free roaming, but from what I read, they are the perfect lizard to allow free roaming rights. They say to watch out for their toes and claws though because carpet fibers can get wound up around them, and they can occasionally get stuck. I guess it matters what kind of carpet you have, or if you have wood floors. I agree with Rollin about the hide box. You still need to provide a basking spot unless there is some window or something that allows a spot to warm up enough. You could just build a small setup just for sleeping and basking and let him enter and exit as he pleases. Just some ideas.

I have another question concerning free roaming teugs. Can you good people share your opinions on the right age, or size, your tegu should be before trying to let him/her free roam??

Yes...I was also wondering about the whole Age/Size thing. Is 30" big enough...and yes I've got wood floors a basking spot (With rocks etc) a moist hide box setup and a spot of my room setup with Bark
