peat moss/vermiculite/lime mixture

schwan Mar 12, 2004 02:13 PM

hi. i just found some stuff in the garage called "jiffy mix" and the ingredients are sphagnum peat moss, horticultural vermiculite, and lime (for a ph adjuster.) i know i can use either of the first two in my humid hides, and i imagine that it's ok to use a mixture of the first two together, but what about the lime? how would that affect my geckos?

any theories and/or experience? any help would be appreciated...

thanks in advance,

amanda

I wouldn't use it... not because of the ingredients, but because I buy Jiffy Mix and its muffin mix that always has bugs and other nasties in it.

Lime is simply limestone, CaCO3, which we all use for calcium supplementation.

You can use it. It is a mix of the ingrediants you listed. It is good for a humid hide.

somebody in another forum told me no, because the lime neutralizes the ph, and it is better to have high ph to avoid mold. but if that's all there is, then that's no problem...i'll just keep a close eye on it. if they lay eggs i'll take them out of that anyways and put them on perlite.

thanks,

amanda
