>>Im considering getting a emerald tree basin from a local breeder. It will be my first snake. My questions are

>>1) how often do i feed them?

A normal sized meal every 10 or so days would be fine. Just like any other snake really.

>>2) what should i look for when purchasing one?

Good skin and muscle tone, clean mouth and healthy respiratory function are always good things to look for. Again, just like any other snake really.

>>3) how much should i expect to pay?

$500 - $5000 depending on quality and seller.

>>4) what is their life span?

30 years wouldn't surprise me.

>>5) do they bite?

Some do, most don't. You'll want to treat them all with respect either way because their teeth are very long and can be very painful when inserted into your flesh.

If you feel that an amazon basin emerald is to expensive why dont you try your hand at a northern first. Husbandry wise it seems as though they are virtualy the same snake so what it realy comes down to is how much you want to pay for those perfect markings. I personaly think it would be wise to pick up a nice young CB Suriname care for it for a year or two and then if you still feel the same way you are right now offer it up as a well established potential breeder and then try your hand at the real deal. Thats my game plan, and it wont cost $3000.00 if you mess up.

This is a pretty big plunge for a first snake. They do have strict husbadry requirements. They are a little more tolerant than normal Emeralds, but not very forgiving. I would suggest getting an Amazon Tree Boa first. If you can keep that happy and healthy(ok Healthy, cuz they never seem happy) I wouldn't recomend an Emerald as a first snake though. Please research this all you can. www.corallus.com is a great site for all the Amazons, and Emeralds. Good luck.
