moss/vermiculite/lime mixture

schwan Mar 12, 2004 03:03 PM

i just posted this on the leopard gecko forum, but i thought that i might get a broader array of answers here. please advise...

hi. i just found some stuff in the garage called "jiffy mix" and the ingredients are sphagnum peat moss, horticultural vermiculite, and lime (for a ph adjuster.) i know i can use either of the first two in my humid hides, and i imagine that it's ok to use a mixture of the first two together, but what about the lime? how would that affect my geckos?

any theories and/or experience? any help would be appreciated...

thanks in advance,

amanda

The lime is a pH balancer to help neutralize the acidity of the sphagnum moss. I would stay away from it as a substrate (due to the lime additive), since the acidity of the sphagnum helps prevent mold from growing.
