Update on "Reli-On" humidifiers,....

BrianSmith Mar 12, 2004 03:51 PM

After trying many other brands of humidifiers I have returned to Reli-on brand cool mist, sonic powered humidifiers. I truly hate the design of them, but they can't be beat for the sheer output of humidity that they achieve in humidifying whole snake rooms. The secret to extending the longevity of the Reli-On is to never let it run dry. Once it is allowed to run dry the sonic disk is damaged forever and the output is greatly reduced if nothing at all. If the unit is maintained with water and is never allowed to run dry then these will last an average of about 2 months (if run 24/7). There is no getting around the fact that these units have a limited lifespan in terms of "hours of usage". I have resigned myself to the fact that I simply have to buy a new one for each snake room every 45 to 60 days. They are only 35 dollars, so it isn't a huge expense for providing proper humidity to all of my pythons and boas.

The brand that sucked the most,.. Vicks! I wouldn't wish this crappy humidifier on my worst enemy. It not only puts out a miniscule amount of humidity, it has this awful netted pad/ring that must be changed every few weeks. These humidifiers are just terrible and the manufacturers ought to be jailed for swindling the consumer. (

That's good to know. Also, JWR Reptiles, who make high quality air cleaning systems (we use them and they work GREAT), just came out with an ultrasonic cool air humidifier. If it works anything like the air cleaners, they will probably have a very long longevity. We are going to pilot one to see how it works and I will let everyone know.

I thought that was pretty fun...thanks for the laugh
Also thanks for the info on the humidifiers. I was thinking about getting one, and should help a lot. Thanks!
