Question about my new baby chameleons

RedAlkiestarte Mar 12, 2004 05:20 PM

I just purchased a pair of veiled chameleons from LLLReptile. I have them in a 65 gallon mesh cage, proper UVB/Heat. I have a lot of vines and fake plants, wood perchs to climb on. They seem to be explororing. I have reptile carpet on the bottom that is a brown color. I just want to know whats the best way of feeding babys (I had adults before) should I put the 2week old crickets on a white lid so they can see them? And how many shoudl I through in? They are about 3-4 inches STL. Thanks

Hm. One thing you need to be mindful of is separating them (two cages) very soon. Soon they will probably begin to tear each other apart.

As far as the crickets, I suggest using a darker colored feed cup, not white if you want more visual contrast. Aren't the baby crickets almost white?

Babies will fight in a 65gallon cage? Its a male and female.

I wouldnt say that they would fight, but the male will put alot of stress on the female. I recently had a pair of baby vieleds in a cage together and it was obvious that the female was stressed. when the female looks for a good basking spot, its very likley that she will venture close to wherever the male is basking-you may see some very interesting behavior exibited by your male, but youl probably also notice tha female turn a dark, drab color. i noticed that the female didnt sleep as soundly, and sometimes she would be awake late at night. it may also cuase problems with your girls appetite. Veileds are a highly aggresive and associal species, and action will need to be taken to separate them soon enough

Jethro's absolutely correct. You need to start worrying about separating thye babies quite soon. Too bad you didn't check out the caging requirements before you got them.

3-4 inces snout to vent? Your chams should easily take 1/4 inch crickets if they are indeed that size. If you dust the crickets properly, they will be almost a chalky white color. You shouldn't have to use a lid. Your veileds should be able to see them as they crawl up the cage walls. One thing about the reptariums though, the crickets will eventually chew holes through the upper corners, and zipper strings will catch. I prefer the screen cages.
As far as keeping the two together- I have succesfully raised chameleons up in the same cage(M&Fpairs). However, I must caution you that the pair you purchased were probably from the same clutch. Not meaning to knock LLL,( I love their screen cages), but big companies like that tend to buy entire clutches from breeders, and there is a good chance that your pair is bro & sis. If your plans were to eventually breed these, I'd look for a different pair. Put the new guy with the female you already have, and the new girl with your previously purchased guy.
Hope this helps,
Cricket
