OH NO! Did I use the wrong silicone??!!

leif Mar 12, 2004 05:47 PM

I was finishing sealing another PDF tank I made when I ran out of silicone. Before I threw it away I looked at the back. It said "not for: Where FDA compliance is neccessary, aquariums"!
I could have sworn when I bought it it said it was good for FDA requirements and aquariums!

It's GE window & door silicone II, 100% silicone sealant.
It doesn't say anywhere on it that it has any other ingredients or additives.

The problem is, my vivarium that I made was done with this stuff. It's been up and running for well over a month now and is fully planted, just waiting for some PDF's. I'v even seen bugs crawling around in it. Now I'm worried I won't be able to use it. Please tell me I'm wrong. Please.

Thanks

I did the exact same thing two weeks ago with the exact same product. I had always heard as long as it's 100% silicone there was no worries, but then I looked at the back, when I was screwing the lid on, and noticed the same thin leif did!! PLEASE ADVISE!!

You should be fine. While this silicone is not my first choice, I have used it before with no problems. Here is a link to Black Jungle that shows that they use it as well.

Yes, I followed the Black Jungle technique. And I like it. But everyone is always talking about food and aquarium safe silicone. And there are some types of silicone with mold inhibitors and other junk in them.

I just want to be sure it's safe before I add my frogs to the viv.

I don't have much of a choice, it's done and there's no re-do on this one.....but I could use it for something else if it wasn't deemed dart worthy.

Thanks for the replies and let this be a lesson! Read all labels VERY CAREFULLY! I could have sworn it said differently....

Those tanks are coming along nicely Kyle.

I had a brainstorm and started converting some old 55 gallon tanks into something similar. I just removed the front and side glass. I used some old storm windows that were hidden in the basement to divide it up. A cheap glass cutter works wonders. Of course all the ugly black silicone will be covered up with a background.

I have one more 55 gallon tank to do this way, then I'm going to tackle my 125 gallon tank.

It will be fine as long as it sets for at least 72 hours before adding any animals. There should be no problem at all after a month.
