Are Chayotes good for iguanas to eat?

Sam-N-Ella Mar 12, 2004 09:04 PM

I was shopping at walmart and decided to pick up a few different fruits of vegies for my iggys that they have never had. I got something called Chayotes which when cut open seems to be like an apple or pear mix with out the core. Are they good for them because I can't find anything that says yes or no? How about ocra? I got them ocra also, and can't find that either. Thanks for your help.

Thanks. I couldn't find those listed on the food chart so I wasn't sure. How often do you give them Okra? Is it harmful in any way for them? Thanks again.

Normally I give fresh okra when I buy it for something like gumbo or to fry or for a soup. lol. So Just every once in a whiile. Ad far as I know its not harmful but some igs wont eat it because of its sticky slime

Thanks. I gave okra to them and Sam(the 2 year old) doesn't like it. The little one Ed(Ella) ate more of it than Sam did, but I don't think they like it too much. I cut up a strawberry and gave them some. They loved it. Sam is not wanting to eat out of my hand today. I think she's mad at me. I took her outside yesterday, but I had her on a leash. I don't think she liked it too much.

Yea, mine wouldn't eat it, I also found it a bit too hard to prepare. But I don't have a food processor or anything

This fruit actually occurs in an Iguana's native habitat and I would say they would eat it naturally. It originated in central and South America but is now found growing in a lot of different places throughout Europe and the US. Its related to cucumbers and squash and other gourds.
