Bedding??????????

ASK Jun 11, 2003 12:12 PM

I have never had a BP (or any other snake for that matter)so I probably sound really stupid.I have a breeder that I will be buying my first from. He says that I should be using cypress for my bedding. Another expierienced BP owner says Aspen, and another says Reptibark. I am confused but my BP hasnt even hatched soUI have time to fix my set-up. Thanks in advance for the help.

Any of the above will work, but I use newspaper, it's cheap, and easy to change when soiled. I think the only advantage of the other beddings you mentioned is that they look more attractive.
Avoid pine or cedar, since they contain oils that are harmful to your snake.

I personally use Aspen bedding but both Cypress and Repti-Bark will work. Just remember that no matter which you choose, do not feed on these beddings. You risk the snake eating some of the substrate and causing major problems. Newspaper is always a great substrate too, it just doesn't look quite as nice. Some people use shredded newspaper so they can hide in it, this works well too.

It's all a matter of taste. Avoid Cedar and Pine, make sure you don't risk burns by the snake being able to get too close to the UTH, and you'll be fine.

I personally would never use newspaper not only is it unattractive but it is not natural for a snake would you want to be put in a cage with a bunch of newspaper? No you would want a bed some couches and some carpeting. Of course a snake wont want that but it would appreciate some bark and moss they make great bedding for me another problem with newspaper it starts to smell quickly.

Newspaper is cheap and easy to clean. Aspen or cypress are great at keeping humidity in the tank...cypress more than aspen, I think, personally. My friend uses reptibark, holds humidity in pretty well also. Some of those substrates can be expensive, so if on limited budget, newspaper works great.
