Mouth Rot/ Eye Infection

4everherpn Mar 13, 2004 07:01 AM

I live in an area where no herp vets can be found. My Trans Pecos Rat has an eye infection and what appears to me mouth rot as well. My professor who has had experience with these says that this is common for them to get this type of thing because of the high humidity levels in KY.

I currently have him in a 15gal on newspaper substrate. He was on wood shavings. He also has a heat pad which he sits on all day long. I am hoping that by increasing his body heat his immune system might help fight this infection. I have been putting triple antibiotic ointment on his eye and infected area of his mouth.

Any suggestions?

This sounds like an URI affecting the perioccular area of the eye as well as going into the oral cavity. If you can, you should see if a vet in the area can determine what the pathogen is & determine by culture sensitivity which drug is appropriate. The most commonly used drug for this type of infection is Baytril (Enrofloxacin) injectable.
Hope your snake gets healthy.
