My first Uro

uromagnus Mar 13, 2004 08:12 AM

Hey... this site is great! Have learned more on here then in anything else I have read. I just brought home a Uromastyx Macfadyeni and I have not seen anything on here about this particular one. If anyone can offer some pointers that would be great. He is in a 40gal breeder tank with play sand substrate. 150w basking light and a 15w 7uvb desert fluorescent lamp. This is only my 4th day and after being very active he has been asleep for 39 hrs at this point. After calling the place where I got him I was told that this is ok and that he may have sensed that the weather is bad out ! This guy always knows what he is talking about and none of what I have read talks about sleeping habits. He is 8" long and a breeder said he is prob under a yr old. would post a pic but no clue as to how.

Not sure about your particular 'brand' of Uro, but as far as sleeping habits go, I'm lucky if my Mali is awake 8 hours a day.
1. Eat a pea.
2. Burrow and rest.
3. Soak up heat.
4. Go to 1.

A temperature gun and one of those digital thermometers (dual reading) are priceless. Gotta keep an eye on the temperature.

are you sure he's not coming out during the day when your not there? most uros especially new acclimates will hide when they see outside movement and come out when no ones there.

just a thought

I would not worry yet , as he is probably still acclimating (getting used to his new home)

Here is info and a pic of your guy from DeerFarms Doug Dix's site
great site for all uro info !

thanks everyone.

i moved the cave he was in and woke him up after my first post. after basking (i put him there) he became very active and was prob awake for up to 8hrs. he ate good too.

i have the tank lit from 7a-7p and the basking lamp on from 9a-6p. does this sound correct ? the under tank heat is not activated as i do not have a temp control for it yet. mt temp range is around 60-65 with lights off at night and 80 on the cool side and around 100 at the lowest basking level (there are 3 levels now) during the day.

i travel often and was wondering how long he can be left unattended for food wise (with just dry in the bowel). lighting heating all on timers.

thnx
