I have a question.
Not meaning to sound rude and all but what is the point of breeding for possible hets?

Het genetic stripe females are $7500 right now. If this guy breeds his het male to 2 normal females and gets 12 eggs (6 each), that's 6 females. 1/2 of those should be 100% hets. But let's just say 2 are. That's $15,000. Holy frickin' frack. That kicks a$$.

It does not take any longer than dealing 100% hets or with fully recessive animals. The time is still the same. The only thing that changes is that he doesn't have to shell out major coin, and it takes up a little more space. But the time it will take to produce a full stripe baby is the EXACT same.

Why can't you see that?

ok. I didn't know what the going price for a genetic stripe was, if i did i would never have asked that question.

I hate talking about money and all that garbage, but for a breeding project with SUPER EXPENSIVE animals, the possible het route is a VERY viable option for many people. Especially for things like Pieds, Clowns, Stripes, and even albinos.

Its different for everyone though. For sure.

Cheers liliroach.

yeah. I remembered something when you mentioned pieds. when i first started coming here in january almost every breeder who had pieds were posting pics of pieds, then it changed over to albinos, and axanthics and now it is mainly pastels.

I even bought a het ghost male this year to breed to a normal and make possible het ghost females. I'm sure that by the time I produce a ghost even I could have bought one but for me it's the fun of producing something on the cheap. Even if I had lots of money for snakes I'd probably still buy possible hets and unproven animals rather than fork over the cash and do it the way most say you should.

Possible hets ROCK man! I'm on that road partially as well! Best of luck to ya!

If you have lots of money to spend, buy a visible genetic stripe...

If you do not have lots of money to spend (or you do not want to spend lots of money), purchasing a 100% het. male or a 50% het. male is a very good way to get into the project...

Breed a 100% het. male to "normal" females...and produce 50% hets...
Keep the 50% het. females...grow them up...breed them to a 100% het. male (or a visible male, if you have one at that time) and you have an excellent chance of producing visible genetic stripes...

Using a 100% het. male in the manner that Jared is using his male is an excellent balance of "cost of initial investment" versus "potential return on investment"...
