jack7777766 Jun 11, 2003 12:45 PM

I know its a bearded dragon but how do they differ from regular dragons??? Are they Inland beardies??? Also why are so many breeders mating them with normal beardies??? Are they separate species???

Thanks
Jack

from what i know german giants are bearded dragons that were originally bred in germany for size and hardiness, breeders here breed them with "regular" dragons to add these attributes to their lines, as well i have heard some say that GG tend to be more laid back, i can say that my guy certianly is laid back but so is my girl and she isnt a gg

this is my GG X gold Carrick =)

they are still Pogona Vitticeps, they just earned the name German Giant from where they originated and for their known size =)

Thanks for the info
If they were all bred in Germany, isnt there allot of inbreeding in that line (German giants). Does it make at all more likely to have inbreeding problems from using german giants???

that came into Germany than what came into the United States and the Germans took the breeding very seriously of these dragons since there were none allowed out of Australia anymore.

From what we have been able to tell of the lines, they were specifically breed for size and heartiness, not for mass selling or color, so paid close attention to avoid inbreeding which they knew would weaken those exact traits they were looking for. There had to have been over 300(this is our estimate from talking with long term breeders there) that came into Germany in the 70's.... a good amount to make a base gene pool.

German Giants in the US have been exposed to some of the same infections, virus and parasites that regular's have been exposed to and not shown effects of it, hence it is felt that they are still a fairly hearty stock in the US and breeder's trying to improve the over all health of their lines are breeding GG's into them.

Also, fresh blood lines continue to come in from Germany and are breed with US lines, they cost a premium, but are worth it to shore up the lines here.

Also from what we have been able to tell studing about a dozen of them, they are more resistant to coccidia and if they do test with more than minimal amount, they are easy to treat and rid of it.

What is the average length and weight of a German giant?

CheriS Jun 12, 2003 08:28 PM

From ours and the ones we have seen they weight between 600 to 850 grams and 21 to 25 inches in length, their heads are much larger than regular... that heavens they don;t give live birth!
