Eggs!!!! I did it!

derek3056 Mar 13, 2004 11:13 AM

My firebellys laid thier sprintime eggs last night, and man did they lay a lot. It's all about having a farely large tank with LOTS of vegatation and about 6 to 10 toads(depending on tanks size). Turning my waterfall off and on durring different parts of the day seems to stimulate them too, especially since my waterfall splashes down on rocks that spray water all over the tank, which to them means rainfall. And once temperatures go from 80 to 85 degrees in the day, to around 72-75 degrees at night, that should get the males to barking.

Well done! All my males are barking but not a single female in the area to be had .

Congrats and let us know how the little ones do!

Hey! Congratulations!
I just wanted to comment that its interesting you said about the waterfall splashing (even though we have two differnt species)- I've noticed with my American Toads that when I give the tank a quick "rain shower" the males get excited, let out one trill and head for the water. Yet they never continue on with mating. (Only once did two of my toads mate, yet none of the eggs were fertilized) Interesting note about the vegetation- I have some large plants in with them, but I think I'm going to try to add more just to see if it helps.
Wondering if you've got a picture of your waterfall! Did you build it yourself or was it purchased somewhere? I've been wanting to add a feature like this to my toad tank. I have bought two pumps but just not sure on how I can build it to make it safe and functional.

I built the waterfall myself. It defenitly helps, but remeber this, there is only so much you can do to get your toads to mate. I have one perticular male who is the biggest, most healthy, and horniest(barks constantly) toad of them all, but yet he gets no action at all, poor guy. All the females tend to go for the newest one I put in there. Go figure. Send me a pic of your tank and I'll send you a pic of mine.
