Maybe an odd/stupid question

SnakeSlither Mar 13, 2004 01:50 PM

I have yet to buy a western hognose..i ahve wanted to for awhile now, but have held off untill i ahve space and money, but is it just me or if you look through the pictures of western hogs thats they seem to ahve different shaped heads( some look to ahve slightly more narrow heads..some are much broader ect.) maybe this is just because in the pictures maybe the snake was puffing slightly or maybe it is just the camera. Anyways I was wondering if their head size/shape vary from snake to snake.....if this was a stupid question(or you dont have any clue what im talking about) just ignore it

The head on mine looks different in about every pic I take. Even when not displaying, his head width will vary quite a bit. There dosn't seem to be a huge variation in head width within a species from my personal experience,

Sometimes like normally (lol), mine will flatten and hiss loudly when I open the cage. This could cause the snake to appear differently in the photos.

What I've really got to say, is! What the hell are you waiting for? These little snakes are great! Dont require a big cage, and feeding is way affordable, not to mention cool to handle.

Deffinatly hook up on some of these this season you can't go wrong. Well maybe you could, but its not likly.
Good lick

hahah thanks..unfortunatly i still live with my parents(but, i just graduated in 2003 it's not that bad to still be) and my mother has never been a snake fan. Since before I can remember I have been really into snakes(reptiles in general) My house has been loaded with random snakes books ranging from the younger kids books, to thick hardcover extensive reads. So yeah untill recently I have not been able to keep any snakes. Plus I want to find a really young one(as young as possible) and that's no easy task around here. Now that i ahve the money, and space though i shall get a hog hopefully in the next month.

-they were always a childhood favorite btw haha

when I first started working with snakes, as a caretaker for an educational collection, the first thing my mother said was 'you are NOT coming home with a snake!' (I tend to accumulate animals well, of course a month later I had my king, and you'd be surprised at how quickly she realized that snakes are pretty cool. I send her all his sheds to show her students. And she came with me to get my hog and thought she was very cute....sooo good luck with your mom, she might realize they really aren;t that bad! (just make sure it is used to being handled before you really show it to her so it doesn;t strike or hiss and scare her--first impressions really are important)

well...haha...i know im new in this forum but ive been wanting a hognose for a while...you see im trying to decide between a hog, a rosy, or a kenyan sand boa...ive kept corn snakes before...which i had to give away cuz i moved back to Taiwan for a while (ive actuallys seen wild mandarin ratsnakes and taiwan beauties)...but now that im back in the states...i wanted to get another snake...i don't know..i never considered cornsnakes "snakekeeping" because they are too undemanding...kinda unfun with no challenge...i'm only fifteen and a sophomore in high school...im asian and if u dont' know anything about asian parents...they either swear by their life that they won't get u nor will let u to keep one...or even get close to one...or they'll buy one and cook it and eat it...fortunately...i somehow persuaded my mom to get the corn...and no she didn't want to eat it ...but she came to the conclusion that snakes are by far the cleanest, least maintenence...quietest...no odorous...*except for hissers and muskers*...and actually pretty animals we have kept...and ive had lots of dogs and cats gerbils, mice, birds... u name it.....so as much as this is an encouragement...im also trying to decide what out of the three snakes i should get...and i don't know if its just me...but most of the people in the forum talk about buying westerns for around 80?...well i live by a reptile store that sells baby ..well..actually almost subadult westerns for 40...sometimes 50 if its bigger...and rosies for 70...all on live prey though...and im pretty sure they don't scent any of their mice when feeding...so i don't know...they seem well established hogs...but im kinda worried about the mild venom...although i know its one out of 100000 that u might suffer a serious reaction from it...but ive been hit by a truck...literally and survived it...thankfully it only bruised my rib and i had a back pack so when i flew and scraped against the asphalt only my backpack was ripped to pieces...but anyway...i just wanted to know if hogs are as docile as they say...and if they are good eaters if already established on mice...*as in voracious or eager eaters*...they are by far one of the cutest snakes ive ever seen...comical in nature...but hell ive heard stories about hognose reactions and pics that scared me a bit...if any of u has kept all three...kenyans rosies and hogs...plz tell me the one u think most suited for a first time owner...*although im not exactly one...but i don't consider corn snakes much of snakeowning...like i mentioned previously, not that i think less of a corn...just not challenging *...i know this is a ridiculously long post but please respond...
