Maybe to get a Monitor....

LizardLuva Mar 13, 2004 03:05 PM

Ok, im still debating over what to get... here are my requirements....

1. Not over 5 ft maximum
2. Probably under $60 for the lizard at an expo, might go higher if needed.
3. OK enclosure size, it will be custom, what about a 4'X5' ground space? might be able to go a little bit bigger.
4. Diet- could it be- Insects(Crickets Roaches), Something like the SDZ diet, pre-prepared diets, vegtables, (NO RODENTS!)
5. Thats about it, o, it needs to be able to be handled.

Thanks! could you also post about lighting, heat and substrate.

I'd start looking at a tegu. Those are some tough req's you have there. Maybe a Ornate Nile, but you don't want to feed rodents. That may be problem. Rodents even frozen thawed serve as a very nutritous meal for all types of Varanus.

Medium or large monitors eat whole animals after all they are predators. Dwarf monitors (ackies, storrs) can eat dusted crickets, roaches, etc. Tegus eat rodents, meat, insects, fruit, veggies (some).
