sorry to keep bugging you all but what do you keep yr humidity at? the petstore says if i spray her tank once a day (like a rain forest has rain once a day type thing) and keep it at about 50 - 60 % humidity for a few hours a day that that will be fine as long as provide a large water dish too is hat what you do?

They live in western Africa.

And they HATE being sprayed with water. Try it and see how your snake reacts.

cbluefairy Mar 13, 2004 06:53 PM

i dont spray the snake lol just her tank usually opposite side she is on so what do i do about humidity? if i shouldnt spray the tank?

jeff favelle Mar 13, 2004 06:55 PM

I just said that Ball Pythons don't live in the rainforest, therefor they are not adapted to rainforest conditions, therefore if you give them those conditions, your Ball Python might not do so well.

Its all up to you.

cbluefairy Mar 13, 2004 06:56 PM

what do you do? what do you suggest i do?

jeff favelle Mar 13, 2004 07:05 PM

Construct a cage setting that mimics a Ball Python's natural habitat without having to "spray daily" or the like.

Hard to tell you what to do differently without seeing pictures of your setup.

I don't attach my banner in replies to other people's posts. I think its bad etiquette. For sure. Its like saying, "I'll reply to your post, but only to advertise my own site". I don't like that. I try to make a conscious decision to click the button to not add the signature in.

But if I start the post, its there! LOL!

Cheers.

ok, thats cool. I always loved seeing your banner though it was so sweet. I actually just went down to look for some old posts of yours i missed it so much.

Oh by all means. Email me at jefffavelle@shaw.ca

The key is to NOT use aquariums. Aquariums are for fish. People always say "but I want to SEE my snake". Yeah? Well if you want a display snake that you can see, buying a subterranean/fossorial nocturnal snake like a Ball Python is not exactly the best choice.

So what does that all mean? Well it means that Ball Pythons are snakes that like tight, small areas, with little airflow, constant humidity that's RELATIVELY high, constant temperatures, and not much traffic.

How does one accomplish this? MANY MANY ways. What's the best way for you? I can't tell you that. That's like me telling you what to have for dinner.

I use a rack system with adequately-sized Rubbermaids. For you, maybe constructing a 36x24x12 wood cage with sliding glass doors is an option? I can't say for sure. The best way is to TRULY understand the requirements of the animal, and then build accordingly.

lilroach56 Mar 13, 2004 08:14 PM

jeff. My BP is in the biggest rubbermaid i could get in my area which is evidently the almost exact size of a 20L aquarium. Where do you get your rubbermaid tubs? and where did you buy your racks?

I build the racks (I think most people do. Unless you have the cake$$ to shell out for Freedom Breeders). Rubbermaisd of appropriate sizes can be bought at Walmart, Home Depot, etc etc etc.

Best of luck. I'm not saying that aquariums can't work. I'm just saying that they aren't the best option.

lilroach56 Mar 13, 2004 08:36 PM

yeah i got my rubbermaid at walmart. At the home depot in my area all they sell are the giant storage bins. Do you know the model number of your rubbermaids? what size are your racks?

The racks are about 6.5 feet tall, with 11 Rubbermaids in each rack. The Rubbermaids measure 34" x 17" x 6.5". The model # is 2159.

i never spray my bp's tank except during shed. I use lizard litter in a rubbermaid container with a waterbowl about 6" by 6" on the cool side and about 15 1/4 inch ventilation holes in the side. that keeps the humdity between 55 and 60%, then during shed i add another waterbowl on top of the warm side hide that is about 4" by 4" and spray it once a day, that keeps the humidity around 75%.
