I just couldn't leave this Savannah at the pet store

lucille Mar 13, 2004 07:05 PM

I already have a zoo. I have a teenager, birds, fish, a Shih Tzu and 4 snakes. I went into the pet store for something else and saw this poor lizard. He is not real lively but I couldn't leave him, the story from the pet store staff (this is a small independent store, not a mart) was that this guy acquired the lizard in Alaska while in the military and kept it, but then got married and his wife was giving him a hard time about having a lizard.
He is 2 1/2 feet came home to a 55 gal. but I went to Lowe's this evening and purchased materials to make a larger enclosure and will begin tomorrow (I have not made a custom enclosure, but due to my budget will have to build it myself).
Advice? (Please don't advise that I should have left him, I hope he makes it because he is not very lively, but he is mine for the duration). I did own a lizard when I was much younger, it lasted 10 years so I have some rudimentary ideas of basking and vitamin D and all, but it has been a while.
Would appreciate advice on:
Building the enclosure-
Savannah ownership-
Thanks ahead for your time

I got my first savannah from a pet store and only got him because I felt sorry for the poor thing. He was in very bad shape but is getting much better and I love to just sit and watch him in his inclosure. Mine wasn't as big as yours but it took alot of time and care to get him to where he is now. I am no expert on monitors, but I do advise to take him to a herp vet as soon as possible. About the inclosue , I built a large one with supplies from Lowes for around $250, it fits in a bay window area. 12ft front, 6ft. back,4 ft wide, 3 ft high.
good luck with your new critter.
