Mystery Toad

This little guy (well, not little, he is 3-4" long and about 3" wide as he sits in the picture) hangs out in my mom's shower in the basement. She said he has been there all winter and usually in the summer, he is also there and brings about 3-5 buddies with him. She leaves the water dripping in there for him so it will stay damp.

The question is, what kind is he? I have been looking online for the last several weeks with no pictures turning up that look like this guy.

Thanks,
mg

Identifying it from this picture will be almost impossible, especially without locality info! Try consulting the Peterson Field Guide to Reptiles and Amphibians for your area.

Sorry about that.
I live in NW Montana,in the north end of the Flathead Valley - about 50 miles from Alberta and BC. I found that he is not a Great Plains toad, because those guys are found on the eastern slope of the Rockies and do not come west of the Divide.

I have narrowed it down tho. He's either a Western toad (Bufo boreas) or a Canadian toad (Bufo hemiophrys). He really doesn't look like either one of the pictures I have found, but descriptions match somewhat. He doesn't croak, but squeaks like a chew toy. I have some crickets here for my Chilean Toads that are a little too big for them to eat, so I sprinkled them with calcium and gave them to the "shower toad." If one of them hopped on him, he would put his head down and puff up. He did however eat four out of seven crickets.

The picture seemed a bit dark on my desktop computer, so I touched it up a bit.

I don't know, but this guy looks alot like our male bufo americanus, Tiny. I'm not familiar with them being as far west as Montana, but that doesn't mean much. Afterall, people keep animals from other areas who get let free and some cross breed. I know Fowlers will cross breed with American toads.

Montana would seem unlikely for an American toad and furthermore, isn't it too early for any toads to be out up there? We're upstate NY and its too cold still.

Also, he looks mighty wet! Was he taken out of the water before the picture was taken? or is he shedding?

Whatever he is, he's cute! I'd love to know if you ever get a solid ID.

He's been in the basement all winter. We have an old garage door down there that has the rubber insulator strip broke off in two places so there is plenty of room for critters to get in under there, so we have toads coming in - and mice.

"Also, he looks mighty wet! Was he taken out of the water before the picture was taken? or is he shedding?"

That spot where he is sitting is the drain for the shower. It was actually a mud shower, with temporary walls. Mom likes it down there because she doesn't have to share (there are 5 of us) and she likes a big area. So, she has fiberglass walls up with a concrete floor. She leaves the water dripping down there, so when the drops hit the wall they splatter then run into the drain. He is usually sitting by the drain.

Yes, he is shedding pretty good. When I picked him up, I got slimed from all the skin coming off.

Thanks! He is really a cutie when he chirps. I get a kick out of him.

Tiny chirps alot, usually in protest when somebody sits on his head while he's borrowed. Its a distinctly different sound than when he does his mating call.

Ok, the garage and shower explainations now make sence to the story.

Have you fed him? Is he eating well?

Yeah, I feed him when I see him. It's been warm here lately and have broken our record highs. I check the shower whenever I am downstairs, but haven't seen him. I figure he is out and about somewhere.

He finds things to eat I am sure. If not, he would be very skinny for a toad that has lived in the basement since winter started in September.
