minimum age for breeding?

zag Mar 13, 2004 10:49 PM

I just read on another website that you should never breed a female dragon that is "in their first year". I have a pair that is almost exactly one year old, and I had planned on breeding them soon. Is this too early for her? They are full grown, seem very healthy, and my male is definitly ready to go.

You will find alot of opinions on this subject. If she is over 300 grams I would breed her, but that is your choice to make.

although i have not bred dragons, i've read enough posts on this forum those those who have. the general recommendation is that females should not be bred before 18 months, and at least 300g. the 18 month wait is recommended so that you can be sure the dragon has finished growing, as pregnancy during the growth stages can be very bad for her.

i hope that you are fully prepared for the breeding, and are doing it because you have a genuine interest in it. i hope you are prepared for the thousands of pinhead crickets you will require, and several large breeder tanks to avoid fighting and toe/tail nipping. please do not breed just because you can, or because you think it would be cool. too many people are doing this already.

if you choose to go ahead with this i wish you the best of luck, and i'll be looking forward to the pictures of the new arrivals down the road.

You shouldn't breed until they are at least 18 months. The female is not fully grown until then. She needs to be fully developed since it is hard on her to carry eggs.
