WC Scarlet Kings on the classifieds

Sean Mar 13, 2004 10:52 PM

Just a note to anyone interested in purchasing Wild Caught Scarlet Kings on the classifieds. If you've never kept a Sk before, these WCs can be very tricky to get feeding and you may want to think twice before ordering. The price may be right but SKs tend to be very finnicky eaters and many buyers end up having a very hard time getting them to feed. Many die because the buyers can't get them to eat. Please do some research on these before you buy. And please consider the thought about buying WCs. I know there aren't many CBs out there but a few people are working on this. Gerry Binczik is one of these people and he plans on selling feeding Cb babies in the futute. If you must have a Scarlet King, please consider the thought of buying a captive bred specimen from someone like Gerry...I'm sure you'll get a much better animal and you'll be happier that you've got a feeding snake. The people you see selling groups of WC Scarlet Kings have just collected them and want to move them quickly...most likely before they die. So please, do some research, buy a captive bred animal if you can, and quit supporting these people that collect WCs just for profit. There simply is no need for that.

I couldnt agree with you more!!!

That is something I for one do not condone, capturing animals from the wild to sell and make a profit.

I would rather see people capturing a few and creating a breeding colony to ease the strain on the wild population. A C/B snake is much more likely to survive than a W/C and should be parasite free.

So, I would say the same thing, buy from a respectable breeder that has some nice stock, and not some unscrupulous person that goes out in the wild, destroys habitat and collects an outrageous amount of animals just for the sake of a few dollars!!!

People like this are why Fish and Game push for more stringent laws against collecting herps!!! Because you have those few people who go out and only care about the mighty dollar!!

And we wonder why we are seeing more and more states becoming non-herper friendly!!!!!

selling ANY cb-rodent feeding babies anywhere in the country!! The fact remains that we NEED wc scarlet kings to continue to tempt enough people into TRYING to become captive breeders who want to deal with this species! In some places even commercial collecting these is LEGAL,so lets not forget that. There is NO WAY any population of scarlet king could be completely wiped out even by rabid commercial collecting.Thier habitat is DEEP,DEEP in the ground/trees where we cant get to.Digging them out of dead ones is commonly done, and IF SUSTAINABLY managed should not be discouraged...but lets face it noone manages themselves.Put very simply Gerry is an EXPERT on these and even he has had troubles with young....the warning should be more about the species/ssp as a whole than the politics of wc/cb.To many(or ALL)there is no option,Jeff
