Veiled not growing

deuce02 Mar 13, 2004 11:36 PM

Have a few ?'s about my male veiled. I purchased 2 male veileds about a month ago, which would make them 2 - 2 1/2 months old. My orange sunburst doesnt seem to be growing. He has yet to shed while my blue phase on the other hand has shed twice and is massive in comparrison. They are currently housed in 16x16x30" screen cage ea. They both have a normal cage temp of around 80 and a basking temp of around 90-95. Their humidity always stays around 50-60% They both have reptisun 5.0 bulbs. Both have well planted cages. dont know what the problem is, hes having such a hard time growing. I am planning on taking him to the vet for a check up but want to get some opinions first. Hes drinking fine. He has been eating but not as i believe he could be. Dont know what else to say.
thanks
patrick

before i start hearing the cage size speech, those cages are temps. They are too small to house currently in their other cages(30"x28"40"ea) they will be moved as soon as i feel they are large enough to do so.

1)Are they visually isolated?
2)How much are you supplementing them? (It may be way too much)
3)What kind of lighting?
4)You say he's drinking annd that's good. But that doesn't necessarily mean he's getting enough water. Please describe your method(s) and duration of hydrating your chams.

They are visually isolated, they are both getting their crickets dusted every third day. They all get sprayed (spray bottle) atleast 3-4 times throughout the day. He shows no obvious signs of dehydration, IE sunken eyes. just not growing like the other, which is getting the same everything.

lighting is reptisun 5.0 over each cage. Plus i try and get them out for a few hours ea to be in their ficus trees near the window and they will both be able to go out side in the summer. heres a PIC of their set up as of now (until they move to their larger cage)

Is the smaller Veiled in the bottom cage? If so perhapse the height is causing it stress, try puting the cage up higher to make him feel more secure.

I should have read your post before I replied!

For how long do you mist? Ideally, it should be until they've stopped drinking for at least a minute or two.

Also, I personally think that supplementing once every three days is too much if you're dusting with any other than pure calcium. Vitamins can be very toxic at high levels.

One more possibility: Is the slow grower in the top or bottom cage? A cham on the floor is a stressed cham. They only feel secure if they can look down on you.

Lastly: I notice the upper cage has the light suspended but on the bottom it's sitting on the screen. If the wattage is the same in the 2 bulbs, the temps will be a lot higher in the botttom cage and there's also the danger of buurns from high screen temps.

But these are my only gueses.

The one on the bottom is suspended as well. Its just the angle the pic is at. He is the one at the bottom but I just moved him to see if it makes any diff. As for supplements, all IM giving him every 3rd day is calcium. I only supplement an all purpose vit dust every week. This was what I was told to do by my vet. It seems to be doing very well for my other veiled I might add! Just cant seem to get this lil guy to grow. I originally had them in a single cage because of their size, but when the other seemed to be getting larger i seperated them. Since then he hasnt grown still. Out of ideas.
