pellets---good or bad?

ptgirl Mar 14, 2004 10:40 AM

I attended the Tampa reptile show and purchased dpm Rep Cal pellets. I was told that the pellets had complete nutrition and there was not a need for crickets, greens, etc. Does anyone use them? If so do you only feed pellets? How much do you give the beardie and how often do you feed them? I understand there is a stage which you wean them off other food and onto the pellets. Where can I buy these in bulk for a reasonable price? Thanks.

Doodle-noodle was raised on crix and greens, but at about 7mo I switched him to a diet of pellets and greens. I had to hand feed him the pellets for the first little while, and hide them in greens with a couple of mealworms in there to get him going, but now he digs right in to pellets and salad. I have an iguana as well, so I always have greens on hand, along with squash, peas, green beans etc grated and mixed, that Doodle eats along with his pellets, and I add supplements to the veggie mix. I find a quick soak in water is all they need, but if they aren't eaten I remove them and throw them out. I can't say its less work than crix, but its alot less stinky than housing crix!

I use Rep-Cal pellets for my Beardie(s) and they like them. I hand feed them moistened adult pellets. I leave pellets that were lightly moistened in a dish in the cage so they have access to them all the time and I also mix moist pellets with their greens. I moisten them with warm water or pedialyte.

From what I can see they're balanced in terms of nutrition. However, although I'm sure pellets alone wont hurt, I don't think I would do that. I still use crickets(canned), veges, fruits, and pellets.

I have 2 beardies that were raised on them. They have protien in them so you are supposed to be able to eliminate insects all together. I still like hand feed them so I do give them silkworms for added protien But they have never seen a cricket.

They are fed greens daily with water soaked rep-cal pellets on top. You can buy them at reptiledirect.com in a 5 pound bag (I think its 5 pounds) and it will last for a long time. I bought the bag in December and I'm no way near half way done. It all pretty simple. I buy the Juvi formula.
