Kansas Amphibian Report....

chad ks Mar 14, 2004 01:35 PM

Kansas-

Douglas County:
8 Psuedacris triseriata
2 Rana blari
1 Rana catesbiena
11 Ambastoma texanum

Missouri-

Jackson County:

2 Psuedacris trisariata
1 Hyla versicolor
1 Bufo Americanus
1 Ambastoma texanum

It was a fun night, lots of smallmouth sallys. The highlight of the evening (for my friends) was when I was running to catch the American Toad in Mo. and slipped off of the road into the four or so foot deep ditch filled with cold water and amphibians. Glad they had a good time. Lol. chad

Fun outing--I had expected hyla versicolor to be hard to find until into May and breeding season. Did you spot any of the smallmouth salamanders road cruising at night, or were they all in ponds/under debris? I'm thinking of cruising a bit tonight in forecasted rain--don't know how effective that can be in Jackson County, but I might give it a try. We used to find tiger salamanders that way in Utah.
I talked to a biologist at J.A.R. reserve who told me, much to my surprise, that in the 15 years he has been there, he has only seen two salamanders--perhaps I'll have to go into Kansas to find tigers.

It was fun. I also was surprised to find the Hyla, like I said in my other post, Hyla normally do not become active until late May. The Missouri texanum was found in the vicinity of a small river opposite of Stanley Kansas. It is raining tonight, so the sallys will be crossing again, more fun. chad
