you need the wattage of bulb that keeps the temps at 90 degrees hot end an 80 degrees cool end. Also with a bulb you need to make sure the humidity is good (55%-65%) because they can dry out the air.

Whatever gets the temps right....ditch the light and go with an under the tank heating pad or human heating pad. The light will likely dry the cage out and cause humidity battles. I think they need more belly heat than overhead heat. It's not like they come out and bask in the sun in the wild - they're nocturnal. I will admit that I have to use a bulb on my cool side to keep that side's temps from getting too low, but my warm side is heating with a UTH. If you can avoid the heat light I'd do it.

I have a heat matt but iits not really good.I went through two.I had to return one becuase it wasnt heating up at all (this on ewent under the the tank.and the one i currently have (goes under the gravel)and its very small like for a ten gallon. But now that you mention it i am going to get a new and better one.but should it be like for a 30 gallon size heat mat for more heat or do you suggest the 20 size heat mat?(I have a 20 long),and under the gravel or tank heating mat?
Thanks,
Juan M
What brands were you using? Was it for humans or reptiles? I've always had problems with reptile mats getting too hot. What were you measuring temps with? Perhaps the readings were off? Whatever size covers 1/3-1/2 of the tank. Don't put it inside the tank it should go under the tank and raise the tank up so there is some airflow underneath.
