Can cornsnakes be handled A LOT ?

lilroach56 Mar 14, 2004 05:01 PM

I am thinking of getting my older brother a cornsnake for a present. can they be handled a lot (for 15 minutes a day) without getting stressed out? what size corn will fit in a 10 gallon aquarium?

Babies will do ok in a 10 gallon but not adults. They need at least a 20 gallon size tank. As far as handling..to much will stress them out. Esp babies. I've read story where this person got a baby corn snake and showed it off to everyone and it ended up dying. If you get a baby have it's enclosure all ready to go and put it in and LEAVE IT ALONE for 3-4 days. When it gets bigger it will tolerate more handling. Do not handle after feeding for at least 24-48 hours.
Be sure your brother really wants a snake and you all know how to care for it before you go buy one. They are great pets.

>>A 10 gallon will last about a year then you would need to move up to a 20 gallon.
As stated, leave it alone for a few days after bringing it home.
After that you can handle it for 15 minutes or more every day. It will not kill it. Of course, you don't want to have it out in cold weather or anything but normal house temps won't harm it for a little while every day.
Do give it 24 to 36 hours after feeding to handle it.

I'd say to be fair to the snake in 10 gallon, a maximum of a foot to 15 inches long. but if you get one that long, it won't be very long before you'll need a 20 gallon to suit it. what's the big deal about the 10 gallon?

we have an extra one and i was wondering how long it would be before it needed a new cage.

Like Draybar said handle it, you wont kill it. Just dont over do it. Dont be passing it around to twenty people at a party or anything. In my opinion a ten gallon tank is plenty big for at least the first year or year and a half. I still have a couple of my 02's in ten gallons. They are definitly ready to make the move up though. I spent the weekend getting a 55 gal ready for one of my pythons so I can free up one 20 gal. Ive got another 20 gal in my shed that needs a little work then every one will be in their new homes.

Is there actually a frog called a horned frog or do you mean a horned lizard?
If you mean a horned lizard then you need to be aware that they eat ants. So, you would also need to get an ant farm or two and keep a steady supply of ants. You can't cheat with them and feed dusted crickets. There is someting in the ants they must get otherwise they will slowly die even while eating crickets and other insects.

yeah its a horned frog (pac man frog) not horned lizard. I'll ask him what he would rather have.

My experience suggests that corns can handle a lot more handling than most snakes.

I say go with the snake as they are more interactive than a frog.

Pets are bad presents. If he really wanted either he would have them by now.I would never give a gift that you have to take care of for 10 plus years unless i knew the person was into reptiles and asked for a specific specie....Paul..
