IS this a Hunger Strike? WHAT DO I DO????

shopaholic Mar 14, 2004 05:20 PM

Hi Folks: I posted yesterday, but the post is not here. Dunno if its my goof up, but heres the scoop. Seems my Male 8 month Panther is on a bit of a hunger strike. Been about 4-5 days now without food. I see him drink from time to time. He doesn't behave differently in any other regard. And eyes, limbs, activitity are all fine. He has refused Supers(which he always loved) Crickets, Wax worms, a stick bug. Here is the set up(still the same as before): 5.0 12 hours/day, spot at 90 f, ambient at 72-75, humidifier 4x/day, misting by hand approx. 14 oz/spraying 2-3x/day, slow drip in between, Rep Cal Calcium w/ D3-Mon., Herptivite-Wed.,Miner All-Fri. What should my next steps be? Vet, bigger cage, Hornworms? What d'ya think? Thanks-maggie

As long as he's drinking dont worry, most chams go through this, you ask about a bigger cage..what size and kind of cage is he in now? unless you have him in a glass cage this should not affect his eating habbits.

Try not giving him any food for 2 days then feed him again. Horn worms and silk worms are taisty foods. I've never had a cham reject a horn worm, one is scared of silkies though.

Well, the cage is fully screen of course. And I picked up a display cage from LLL and checked with the Kammers about the size 16x16x30 as to its appropriateness for him at 5 months old. I realized that it was a small cage and the advise was to get the full size cage around summer(that would put him at 11-12 months old). Well, I had planned on putting together a full size outdoor cage this month(he's 8 months old) way ahead of summer, and I just wonder if I should get him out of the smaller cage sooner then summer. Thanks-maggie

You are over-supplementing the crap out of him. He get no D3 and the other stuff no more than once every 2 weeks. You're going to cause liver & kidney damage. I'm not saying that's his problem but it will be if you keep that up.

As for the hunger strike, as long as he's drinking I wouldn't get that upset about it.

my supplementation of my chameleons, at least the ones 5 months and older is similar to hers only i have a calicium only day. as long as she doesnt se any problems i dont think that is a problem. chameleons dont eat sometimes it's that simple. when their hungry they will.

REALLY???? That was the schedule that the Kammers told me to do. I asked about it several times as I was most uncertain about this and the debates over the topics made my head spin. Well, should I take him in for some sort of blood screen or whatever else to determine if he's got any signs of oversupplementation? I'm very concerned!! Thanks-Maggie

No. If the Kammers told you it was OK, go with their advice. They're the best. It really depends on what supplements your using. But I'll defer to their expertise any day.
