Has anyone ever had any problems using vermiculite, or perlite? More..

Poohbear03031 Mar 14, 2004 07:54 PM

I am thinking of using it in my hideboxes, but I am nervous that the geckos might ingest it. Has anyone ever had this happen? Also is there a certain kind to use? Thanks for any help.

I have a couple of geckos that eat vermiculite. I tried perlit in my hatchlings hides last year, a bunch of them ate it. I was really worried that I'd lose them all, but miraculously they managed to poop it all out. So far, I've found bed-a-beast and eco-earth to be the safest medium for my moist hides.

Dont use perlite for your hide box substrate. Its to abrasive. Vermiculite and peat moss/spahgnum moss will work fine for substrate in a humid hide. Paper towels is even better yet. Much cleaner and not as messy.
