Ok still searching for the perfect pet....

LizardLuva Mar 14, 2004 08:14 PM

I recently just was drifting around the snake forums, because soon i will be allowed 1 new pet. I stumbled upon Ball Pythons which i figured were out of the question due to the fact as snakes eat mice, and i ve kept rats, so i would feel uncomfortable. But a few mins ago, i noticed Snake Steak Sausages...

Now this seems like a good starter for me, and because im a teenager, my mother to allow me to get a snake. I have also learned a little bit, and housing is not a problem, neither is heating, lighting, cage setup, etc; only the feeding.

I was thinking of starting outa hatchling python on the sausages for a few months, and then convinving my mom into frozen mice, as in they are already dead, im just using them for what they are used for, is this a good idea?

Also price wise, at an expo what do normal hatchlings go for?
Thanks

I wil GIVE you a baby Ball Python.

Scroll down this forum and look at how many newbie post "my Ball won't eat". Yeah. You won't get one to eat a sausage. LOL!

I have never tried it but I doubt you could get one to take sausages. You may even have to feed live mice for quite some time. Just depends on the snake. You can get one for about 10 bucks at a show. Hope this helps. EP

ok first of all. i have never seen balls at a show for ten bucks. Not anything that isnt a true fresh import hatchling that probably hasnt fed yet anyway. And usually not even fresh import hatchlings. you can expect to pay $40 for a yearling. I know this cause i just went to a show and bought one this weekend and thats what everyone had them for. Be carefull at a show though as a lot of people will try to tell you anything to to get you to buy, just so they can clear their stock for this years babies. A best bet is to get a 2003 year old though, cause you know it has fed. There are very good chances that it will be farm raised which is fine. But if you can find someone who personally bred them here in the states it is well worth the extra money. Well worth it. well in any way. good luck. Also i have tried sausages with my balls, yeah they are a no go. Even for my ball that i have had for two years who hasnt taken a week off of feeding since i got him wont even eat them. corns on the other hand i have found to take them. But hey any way good luck with your new snake. p.s. Make sure to ask that it has fed and they guarantee feeding with whatever you buy.

I personally think if you can't feed it it's natural diet you shouldn't get one. I can't imagine a ball pyton taking them. I also have to question the nutritional value of these. But you might consider some of the other snakes that eat insects, etc.

Ball Pythons don't eat domestic rats or mice in the wild either, so should everyone else not keep them?

Tigergenesis Mar 15, 2004 01:29 PM

They eat rodents and other small mammals in the wild. We know that food works for them. Their natural diet are small mammals - I'm just saying they should at least be given that. Show me long term studies of a group of Ball Pythons feed these sausages and all being healthy and I'll go for it. I'm not one to jump on new things until they've run their course and been proven okay (that's why as much as I'd love laser eye surgery I won't do it yet).

Ball pythons are adapted to eating rodents. If you can't or won't offer strictly rodents to your ball python, then don't get one. It's that simple.
