What kind is this?

This salamander was purchased as a Christmas gift for a friend of mine.. it was a larva at the time, only about 4 inches. It is now, certainly no more than 5 inches.. Probably no bigger than it was as a larva. I'm looking it up, and it looks like a tiger salamander, but the gills were reddish and fleshy, not thick and tubular like the tiger I used to have.. Plus, my tiger was over 10 inches, even as a larva.

By color, it looks like a tiger, but because of its size, I'm wondering what it may really be.

Any thoughts?

yep its a tiger-just a young one, they will morph alot smaller than their adult size, only if temps and food are against them will they grow up slower and morph larger(sometimes as second year larval morphs). it will get bigger dont worry-but since it is at a smaller size it will take longer as a land animal than it would take as an larval form. it is my experience that larval sals feed more frequently and eat more, but lucky for your friend tigers are known for being big eaters!
