Bearded Dragon Breeding

craigreptile Mar 14, 2004 10:43 PM

Hello,

I recently bought a pair of bearded dragons and have been trying to get them to breed. They are both healthy and of good size. My problem is that when the male chases the female down and bites her neck and then gets on her they dont mate. He just does that, sits on her and get off after a couple of seconds. Anyone seen this before? I have only tried putting them together a couple of times so I am hoping that soon they will succsessfully mate. Also, currently I have them both is seperate 30gallon aquariums and plan on moving them to 50s soon. Could this be it? Not enough room? Any responses are greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Craig

My male aslo does that i have hatched 5 diffrent clutches of eggs but i still havent actually seen them breeding but i have them in a large enclosure my male "Carl" seems to do the smae thimg he gets on her and bites her then leaves, i suggest you leave them together for a while overnight they probly want some privacy......becuase My female just laid 15 eggs today.

Lots of times when the male does that he is getting some kind of signal from the female that she is not ready. I would seperate them for a while, and wait until they have LEAST 50 gallons before breeding again. Are you sure your ready for up to 30 baby lizards eating 10,000 pinhead crickets a week? Not counting the cost for housing, UVB, lighting, salad, electric bills, etc. Plus finding homes for all of them. Its a big jump, so be sure your ready.

Good Luck, and keep us posted!!

So is their anything I can do to make the female more willing? Also, although the male was probibally hibernated and is very interested in breeding the female was not put through a hibernation. Could this explain my problem?

Thanks,
Craig

Yes, usually the male is willing to breed year round but the female needs brumation (USUALLY, not always) ...you culd try fattening her up as much as you can and giving her lots of vitamins and calcium. Otherwise, there is nothing really that you can do
