My new venture...

shuler06 Mar 14, 2004 11:07 PM

Here is a pic of what I hope to turn into a successful breeding operation. This is just the first cycle so the majority of the worms that make it to maturity I will allow to cocoon and become moths, lay their eggs and then I will start my leos on a staple of Silkworms. Wish me luck

We just bought 50ct. from a reptile show in Berea today-- The Leo loved them, though the AFT was pretty indifferent. Good Luck with them! Keep us updated on how it goes.

Yea my animals love the silkies. Two jackson chams, a bearded dragon and all my Leos have showed appetite for them so I decided to make it my staple. I still have a few crickets but not much. I ordered a 500ct while I try to start a few colonies. Good luck, let us know how it goes.

The trees grow everywhere out here, but was curious how to feed silkies when there aren't any mulberry leaves available.

LOL...Dang Marcia the one time I could answer a question for you! Yes I am using Silkworm Chow, they seem to be doing fine. In another 4 days they will come out of the incubator and we'll see then. Even if I had Mulberry leaves, and they do grow out here in Florida, I don't think I could use them for anything but adults. The young ones need the tender new leaves/buds from the tree, because their mounths are too weak to chew the older leaves. I don't have the time to go out searching for those. Also they are quite fragile critters, any chemicals or of course insecticides would probably kill the whole colony. I will be weighing the factors of cost of the chow, because you can only get it 3 or 4 places, and the health of my leos once they start eating Silks. I plan on having a decent colony so I think the health of my leos will win out.
